Basic Life Support and CPR training at SSLTC

We wrote to all members about the very sad death of Phil Gingell due to cardiac arrest at the club last month, and said we would follow up with details about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for members. Each year over 40,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK and giving CPR promptly and using a defibrillator can more than double the chances of survival. There were CPR trained and fast responders on the day that acted in Phil's best interests and gave him the best possible chance. But it is very apparent that the more members trained in emergency CPR, the better chance they will be at the club when needed, as thankfully people were there for Phil. To this end the club will subsidise two training sessions (£8-900), for up to 12 people each, to attend a 3-hour session (excluding breaks) at the club.

The session will cover basic life support including:

•     The role of the first aider including the importance of preventing cross infection

•     Assessing any situation to act safely, promptly and effectively in any emergency

•     Recovery position for an unconscious, breathing casualty

•     CPR for an unconscious, non-breathing casualty.

•     Use of an automated external defibrillator

•     Choking first aid for casualty with a blocked airway.

We are looking for volunteers (over the age of 16) to attend this course (at no cost to members). This is not a first come, first served enrolment. The committee are keen to have a cross section of members groups, such that there is the best chance of a trained person being at the club when needed. So, if you are playing regularly at the club, not received CPR training previously, and would be willing to step forward, then please reply to ssltcsafeguarding@gmail.com. Twenty-four candidates will be selected from those volunteering. Please volunteer by email before Friday 21st August.

The training will be organised in September or October, one session during the day and one for the evening. Each participant will be issued with a competency certificate valid for 3 years.

But something everyone can do now…..

For all those not selected or able to attend the session, we would strongly urge you to take the online British Heart Foundation training, named RevivR, which is a free 15-minute interactive CPR course. All you need to attend this course is your mobile phone or tablet and a cushion to practice on, and you will be issued with your own CPR certificate. Whilst not as in depth as the 3-hour training course, you will learn to identify a cardiac arrest, make a simulated 999 call, perfect your CPR technique and learn how to use a defibrillator. Why wait, start the RevivR training now by clicking this (overly long) link.

We look forward to hearing from you.
